Boston

Boston is a city that people love because it's almost as cosmopolitan as a megalopolis (except to New Yorkers), but it doesn't sprawl as badly. Packed with cultural attractions, stellar universities and the brainiacs they produce, New England's capital by the sea boasts a wide array of prestigious and risk-taking employers.

From the Museum of Fine Arts to the Museum of Bad Art, Boston and its surrounding communities are full of surprises for nonnatives who still think of it as little more than a Brahmin bastion with an all-time great baseball team.

Higher education is a huge employer here. There are 57 colleges and universities in the metro Boston area, including Harvard and MIT. Healthcare is an even more important job creator, along with its sexy cousins, the biotech and nanotech startups. Doctors must elbow their way into the top jobs; there are 499 physicians per 100,000 residents in the area, nearly twice the national average.

Recent employment gains in these sectors are tempered by recent job losses in the region. Massachusetts manufacturing lost 85,000 jobs between 2000 and 2004.

Companies in financial services and pharmaceuticals have done substantial hiring recently, such as Citizens Bank, Liberty Mutual Group, Novartis Pharmaceuticals and Millennium Pharmaceuticals.
